BOSTON & HINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fairbanks Energy Services, a full-service design/build energy conservation firm and developer of comprehensive commercial and industrial efficiency projects, has announced the completion of more than 20 energy efficiency projects at one of the nation’s top ranked hospitals, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). To achieve optimal financial and energy savings throughout the many upgrades, Fairbanks Energy has secured a total of $727,000 in Eversource and National Grid utility incentives for MGH by engineering and implementing numerous LED lighting and advanced controls retrofits throughout a variety of the hospital’s buildings on its main campus, in addition to other efficiency enhancements in its facilities throughout Boston.
Since 2014, Fairbanks Energy has contracted with MGH under their Strategic Energy Master Plan, which mandates energy conservation projects that also improve the conditions of their patients, staff and the environment. The firm’s engineering team has completed 22 LED lighting projects to date, with additional efficiency improvements to be made. The projects have been completed throughout a number of buildings on the hospital’s main campus, as well as facilities located in the surrounding cities of Boston. Renovations have been made in hallways, common areas, warehouse facilities, building entrances, exterior areas of buildings, research labs, administrative offices and amenities such as cafeterias and cafes.
Most recently, Fairbanks Energy completed a lighting and advanced controls retrofit at MGH’s Yawkey Building. The project consisted of replacing 890 fluorescent fixtures with energy efficient LED lighting. A third of the lighting was equipped with a solution that maximizes energy savings by providing automated granular dimming in response to both occupancy sensing and daylight harvesting. Fairbanks Energy was able to bring the wattage of existing fixtures from 90 watts down to 12, resulting in a decrease of 87% in energy used. As a result, energy usage at the Yawkey building was reduced by 445,000 kWh annually, or the equivalent of keeping 36 households powered for a year. To help maximize the Return On Investment (ROI) for the campus, efficiency engineers at Fairbanks Energy Services secured $81,000 in Eversource utility incentives for the project, culminating in a payback of less than 2 years.
