LONDON--()--According to the latest market study released by Technavio, the global radiation hardened (rad-hard) electronics market is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 3% during the forecast period.

This research report titled ‘Global Radiation Hardened Electronics Market 2016-2020’ provides an in-depth analysis of the market in terms of revenue and emerging market trends. This market research report also includes an up to date analysis and forecasts for various market segments and all geographical regions.

According to Chetan Mohan, a lead analyst at Technavio for embedded systems research, “Brazil, Russia, India, and China are likely to contribute a major share to the market during the forecast period due to an increase in the number of space exploration projects by the governments and a rise in commercial satellites because of high demand for internet connections and higher bandwidth speeds.”

The report categorizes the global rad hard electronics market into four major end-user segments of which the top three are discussed below.

  • Government
  • Defense and military
  • Commercial
  • Others

Government

This segment is expected to grow at a falling rate due to declining budget allocation for space programs, nuclear power reactors, and avionics. The high costs of rad-hard electronics and tight budgets will increase the use of radiation-tolerant devices, along with radiation shielding and packaging available in the form of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), in projects/missions. Government projects are being created for specific objectives and with shorter life spans, due to which the manufacturers use COTS instead of specific rad-hard electronics. The growth rate of the segment will fall during the forecast period due to a decline in the government budget with respect to the space industry (non-military).

Defense and military

The defense and military segment includes satellites, avionics, rugged technology devices for ground forces, and nuclear weapons. With shrinking defense expenditure, globally, the defense and military segment has increased the consumption of rad-hard electronics to increase its cost advantage. “The cost involved in the higher consumption of rad-hard electronics can be realized over the prolonged shelf life of the application,” says Chetan.

Though the defense expenditure is reducing, the budget allocation for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) activities is still significant. The increasing threat to national security (due to terrorist activities) has resulted in a substantial rise in budgets allocated to ISR missions. Technological advances in the aerospace industry and high-altitude aircraft and satellites, which are being used for ISR activities, require larger volumes of rad-hard electronics.

Rad-hard electronics are also used in rugged devices that find their application in hard environments. These rugged devices are exposed to extreme temperatures and electromagnetic pulse (EMP), and failure of these electronics could result in high collateral damage to life and property in the battlefield.

Commercial

The commercial segment includes satellites, avionics, telecom and communications hubs, and COTS electronics. The revenue contribution of this segment is largely dominated by the satellite industry. This segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 6% during the forecast period due to increasing demand for commercial satellites with long shelf life. The demand for commercial satellites is influenced by the increasing use and penetration of smartphones which in turn leads to demand for internet connectivity and higher bandwidth speeds.

Each satellite requires a certain percentage of rad-hard electronics, based on the exposure to radiation. Higher volumes of rad-hard electronics are used with the increasing radiation exposure. Since most of the commercial satellites are lower earth orbit (LEO), the ratio of rad-hard electronics used in a commercial satellite is less. However, larger volumes of rad-hard electronics are likely to be used in these satellites to increase their shelf life. Hence, the growth of the global rad-hard electronics market depends on the increasing number of commercial satellites.

The top vendors highlighted by Technavio’s hardware and semiconductor research analysts in this report are:
