NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The famous ski resort of Vail, located in the Colorado Rockies, is the most expensive winter destination in the United States. That’s according to a recent survey conducted by CheapHotels.org.
The survey pitted all U.S. destinations against each other based on the minimum price travelers will have to pay to stay in the cheapest available double room. An average price for each destination was determined for the winter months of December, January and February. It has to be noted that only hotels rated at least 3 stars and with a positive average client rating were taken into consideration by this survey.
Averaging $243 nightly for its least expensive double room, Vail sits on top of the rankings. Florida’s Key West follows as the runner-up at an average price of $234 per night. Meanwhile Aspen, another Colorado ski resort, completes the Top 3 podium at an average overnight rate of $227.
Lahaina is the most expensive destination in Hawaii. It ranks sixth most expensive overall in the United States at $216 per night. Palo Alto, home to Stanford University in Silicon Valley, California, rounds out the Top 10 at an average price tag of $175 per night for the most affordable double room.
The survey found that December is still rather affordable for most of the Top 20 priciest destinations, with rates rising significantly starting in mid-January. Peak rates are then generally reached for the long President’s Day weekend (February 17–20) when for some destinations (Vail, Lahaina, Sanibel Island) no rooms can be found for less than $300 per night.
The following table shows the 10 most expensive winter destinations in the United States. The prices shown reflect the average rate for each destination's cheapest available double room for the time period spanning
