WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The National Geographic Channel (@NatGeoChannel) announced today the launch of a nationwide college campus tour for its new film BEFORE THE FLOOD to raise vital awareness during this election year about the urgent need to address climate change.
The film, directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Fisher Stevens (@FisherStevensBk), and produced and narrated by Academy Award®-winning actor, environmental activist and U.N. Messenger of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio (@LeoDiCaprio), will tour to at least 50 college campuses. The announcement coincides with National Voter Registration Day (www.nationalvoterregistrationday.org) — a national effort to engage Americans to exercise their right to vote.
BEFORE THE FLOOD presents a firsthand account of the dramatic changes now occurring around the world due to climate change, as well as the actions we as individuals and as a society must take immediately, in order to prevent these catastrophic disruptions to life on our planet from becoming a permanent reality for future generations.
The film follows DiCaprio as he shows the devastation of climate change on five continents and the Arctic. He speaks with top scientists, world leaders, activists and local residents to gain a deep understanding of the complex and interconnected nature of climate change, and to determine concrete solutions to the most pressing environmental challenge of our time.
“Climate change is the most critical and urgent problem facing our world today, and it must be a top issue for voters this Election Day,” said DiCaprio. “Fisher and I set out to make a film that not only educates people about the challenges we face if we fail to act, but one which also shows the solutions we can implement if we can find the political will to do so. We need leaders not only in the United States, but across the globe, who believe in the science of climate change and who have the courage to take a stand for our planet. Bringing this film to college campuses is a key component to engaging young voters to hold our leaders accountable.”
“As last night’s debate made clear, climate change is and should be a pivotal part of the conversation for this election,” added Fisher. “We are thrilled that National Geographic shares our desire to bring this issue to the forefront and demand that anyone running for elected office make their intentions on this issue known.”
National Geographic Channel has partnered with Rock the Vote and theSkimm to ensure everyone who attends a screening of BEFORE THE FLOOD can register to vote and is informed on the issues. Audiences will be encouraged to register to vote online at rtvote.com/beforetheflood or by texting “BeforeTheFlood” or “BTF” to RTVOTE (788-683).
theSkimm will be activating their network of 14,000 Skimm’bassadors across the country to attend screenings of the film, and on-campus Skimm’bassadors will be on site to register voters and share their voters’ guide.
“theSkimm is nonpartisan. We don’t care who you vote for, but we’re making sure there are no excuses when it comes to getting out and voting in this election,” said Carly Zakin, co-founder and co-CEO, theSkimm. “If your state allows online voter registration, we’re making it easy to register online at theskimm.com/vote. If you need to mail in a signed form or need an absentee ballot, our Skimm’bassadors will be at these screenings to help,” added Danielle Weisberg, co-founder and co-CEO, theSkimm.
“Through this tour, we hope to register at least 50,000 students to vote and ensure they are informed on the dire need for action to fight climate change,” added Courteney Monroe, CEO, National Geographic Global Networks. “We share Leo and Fisher’s passion for this issue, and this college tour marks the beginning of our aggressive plans to make sure as many people as possible can see this important film.”
BEFORE THE FLOOD will screen at the White House on Oct. 3 as part of the South by South Lawn Event, opens in theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Oct. 21, and premieres on the National Geographic Channel on Sunday, Oct. 30, in 171 countries and 45 languages.
