USAA and PsychArmor Alliance Delivers First-of-its-Kind Online Education Program for Military and Veteran Caregivers and Families

WASHINGTON--()--USAA and PsychArmor Institute today unveiled a first-of-its-kind online “School for Military and Veteran Caregivers and Families.” This educational and proactive support program provides free educational content for military and veteran caregivers, who consist of family and friends who voluntarily care for wounded, ill or injured military service members or veterans.

The courses in the new online school cover a range of subjects that have been identified by military and veteran caregivers as educational needs, including subjects like “Understanding Invisible Wounds of War at Home,” which is comprised of seven online courses that educate and advise caregivers on supporting loved ones with injuries such as PTSD, TBI, depression, and substance use disorder that are not visible. PsychArmor also offers a support call center which complements the online training material by providing follow-up coaching and counseling services from mental health clinicians. PsychArmor has partnered with the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Caregiver Support Program to develop content specific to the unique needs of military and veteran caregivers. The school’s online education content will be featured on The Elizabeth Dole Foundation’s HiddenHeroes.org website, which also launched today to provide a wide array of resources exclusively for military and veteran caregivers and family members.

“Military and veteran caregivers provide essential care and support for our nation’s wounded, ill or injured military service members,” said Justin Schmitt, Assistant Vice President of Corporate Responsibility at USAA. “The educational material offered by PsychArmor will provide meaningful support that is accessible to caregivers no matter where they live or what their challenging schedules look like. It is critical to support the care-giving hidden heroes who take care of those who have sacrificed so much for our country.”

Military and veteran caregivers, who can be spouses, parents, children, siblings, loved ones and friends, play a critical role in the military and veteran communities. They assist wounded, ill or injured military service members with tasks of daily living, such as bathing and getting dressed, dealing with the hidden wounds of war, daily medical procedures and physical therapy and management of finances, legal matters and doctor appointments.

“Having an impactful and like-minded company like USAA involved is the perfect alliance,” said Marjorie Morrison, founder of PsychArmor. “We’re here to help support our service members, veterans and their families, and USAA enables us to bring our programs to a much wider audience.”

PsychArmor’s commitment to deliver valuable education to caregivers and families in a manner that can be delivered to fit into their busy and often chaotic schedules aligns closely with USAA’s commitment to the military and veteran communities. The two organizations are also closely coordinating with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation and its Hidden Heroes campaign to maximize the exposure and dissemination of these training courses to the widest possible audience.
