In 2015, Canada and China were the main suppliers of plastics bottles to the U.S., together making up 65% of U.S. imports. From 2007 to 2015, China had the highest growth rates of imports, with a CAGR of +11.2%, while imports from Canada posted only modest growth by +1.4% per year.

China significantly strengthened its position in the U.S. import structure from 20% in 2007 to 31% in 2015, while Canada saw its share reduced from 44% to 34%. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analysed period.

From 2007 to 2015, the U.S. was a net importer of plastic bottle. Net U.S. imports displayed an upward trend since 2009. In 2015, this industry ran a significant trade deficit of 275 million USD. This deficit could grow substantially in the years to come, driven by negative trend of exports.
