MORRISTOWN, N.J.--()--Schindler Elevator Corporation has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to modernize and maintain 109 elevators and 116 escalators at 38 stations throughout the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) system.

MARTA is the eighth largest rapid transit system in the United States, providing service to more than 134 million riders annually in Atlanta, Ga., including service to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the busiest in the world.

“We are very excited to work with MARTA, modernizing and maintaining elevators and escalators for this historic project over the next ten years,” said Greg Ergenbright, president of Schindler Elevator Corporation. “Schindler’s proven commitment to safety, reliability and sustainability make us an ideal partner for MARTA, and our innovative technology will be integral to helping them make their ambitious long-term vision a reality.”

The contract is part of the MARTA Transformation Initiative (MTI), a program focused on specific goals providing the best benefits to the Authority and its stakeholders over the next five years, including saving money, developing better strategies, and taking advantage of new technology. Schindler was selected through a procurement process that took into consideration Schindler’s successful modernization of 33 escalators completed in 2011 and outstanding historical maintenance record with MARTA. Schindler’s technical excellence and expertise providing replacement solutions for the mass transit segment have resulted in elevator and escalator availability rates of more than 98%.

“We’re proud to continue our fantastic partnership with MARTA,” says Glenn Rodenheiser, area general manager, Schindler. “Schindler has a relationship with MARTA going back more than three decades. That they have entrusted us with this modernization and the maintenance of all of their equipment, shows the strength and dedication of our team to creating long lasting partnerships with our customers.”

Schindler’s advanced, energy-efficient escalator equipment designed specifically for high-capacity traffic will improve mobility and efficiency throughout the MARTA system.

Of the 116 escalators, 74 will feature Schindler’s InTruss product, a comprehensive modernization package specifically designed to enable facilities to upgrade their existing escalators with customized, state-of-the-art equipment to meet the highest standards for reliability, efficiency and sustainability with minimal downtime. All of the elevators and escalators feature 24/7 remote monitoring, for faster callback response and continuous operational analysis to maintain MARTA’s sterling availability records.
