Travelers Gives $58,000 to Jim Furyk’s Charity of Choice After Record-Setting PGA TOUR Score

HARTFORD, Conn.--()--The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TRV) today announced that it will contribute $58,000 to Jim Furyk’s charity of choice in recognition of his historic 58 — the all-time lowest score on the PGA TOUR — in the final round of the 2016 Travelers Championship. Furyk shot 12 under par at TPC River Highlands, with 10 birdies and an eagle.

Travelers Executive Chairman of the Board Jay Fishman and Chief Administrative Officer Andy Bessette congratulated Furyk immediately after his record-setting performance and told him the news. While Furyk insisted the full donation go to the Bruce Edwards Foundation for ALS Research, Fishman and Bessette pledged half the amount — $29,000 — to the Jim & Tabitha Furyk Foundation.

Fishman said, “This is a remarkable and unprecedented event for the Travelers Championship and the PGA TOUR. Jim and his family deserve the opportunity to do good things for the causes that matter deeply to them, and we are enormously appreciative of their contribution to allow us to carry on in the Bruce Edwards and Tom Watson tradition.”

The Jim & Tabitha Furyk Foundation was created in 2010 and is dedicated to helping support organizations that lend a hand to those who can’t fulfill their most basic needs. By providing project-specific funding to these organizations, the foundation helps to give food to underprivileged children, offer care for children with life-limiting or threatening conditions and provide a safe place for children to go after school.

The Bruce Edwards Foundation for ALS Research is dedicated to finding treatments and, ultimately, a cure for ALS. All funds raised go toward organizations and medical facilities dedicated to ALS research. Its primary beneficiary is the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Travelers Championship held a dinner Friday, Aug. 5, to benefit the Bruce Edwards Foundation for ALS Research. Furyk attended the event along with other players and caddies. The event raised more than $1.2 million.
