MIAMI--()--DHL Global Forwarding, the air and ocean freight specialist within Deutsche Post DHL Group, invited industry experts and customers to “The Evolving World of Customs” seminar. Given its strategic location on the West Coast, DHL organized the customs event in Los Angeles, California to keep current and prospective customers up-to-date, given the recent and upcoming changes in customs, such as the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) deadlines. Guest speakers included members from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Avalon Risk Management and DHL Global Forwarding.

“Through this DHL University event, customers were provided an in-depth overview of the recent regulation changes and current trends in the customs brokerage field. However, the seminar also served as an opportunity for customers to discuss customs topics directly with experts,” said Jim Miller, senior director for Customs Brokerage at DHL Global Forwarding, U.S. “The information presented to DHL’s customers at the event will prove valuable as they apply the knowledge to sales, purchases and logistics contracts without sacrificing compliance.”

Karen Damon, senior director of Import Compliance and Regulatory Affairs for DHL Global Forwarding, opened the event. With more than 24 years of customs brokerage experience and active service to the National Customs Broker and Forwarder’s Association of America (NCBFAA) assisting with the promotion of education within the trade, she addressed Importer Security Filing (ISF) penalties and mitigations, and new import child labor regulations.

Following Damon was Keith Sanchez, divisional vice president, Western Division at Avalon Risk Management, Inc. As past president of the Foreign Trade Association and having catered to the international trade and transportation community’s financial services for the past 23 years, he provided updates on ACE, eBonds, ISF, ADV and other bond requirements. Christine Hogue, assistant center director, Electronic Center of Excellence and Expertise (eCEE) at CBP also shared her eCEE perspective given her national oversight of all eCEE enforcement actions; extensive knowledge in international mail, express consignment and trade; plus 24 years of experience with CBP.

Established in 2007, DHL University is present in the U.S. and in all Latin American countries where DHL holds operations. Since its creation, the program has fostered engagement with customers and showcased DHL’s expertise in logistics topics, as well as its reliability as a resource of information regarding local and global issues, innovations and best practices. Seen as a best practices and knowledge exchange tool, the DHL University model has been shared across the DHL network and has been adopted by other business units. In 2014, DHL Global Forwarding also launched free monthly 60-minute customer webinars in the U.S. that focus on various customs and trade topics.
