The increased use of surgical booms has allowed for more monitors to be brought into the OR environment. Previously, bringing more monitors into the OR meant more carts and cables to accommodate them. This brought congestion to the OR and increased the risk of injury to the operating team.
Surgical booms avoid this by placing the displays above the operating area and reducing their footprint in the OR. For certain disciplines, such as interventional radiology, there has been an increase in large displays, in the range of 56 to 60, being boom mounted.
