José Carrera, Sr. served on First Credit Union’s board of directors since 2001. He served as vice chairman from 2010 until 2012, when he was named chairman. During his years of volunteer service he completed all of the Credit Union National Association’s Volunteer Achievement and Leadership Education programs.
Carrera also volunteered with the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. He was instrumental in getting First Credit Union involved with the program by hosting VITA sites at its branch locations.
José Carrera, Sr. served in the United States Air Force and retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he investigated federal crimes against the U.S., specializing in financial business and accounting methodology cases. A native of El Paso, Texas, he earned his undergraduate degree from Texas Western College, and graduate degree from Inter-American University of Puerto Rico. Carrera was a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, Knights of Columbus (Third and Fourth Degrees), and National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
José Carrera, Sr. is survived by his beloved wife Lucy Galvan Carrera, their children José L. Carrera, Jr. and Juan Luis Carrera, daughters-in-law Erlinda G. Carrera and Molly Rausch Carrera, and grandsons José L. Carrera, III and Andres L. Carrera.
