408 High-Power DC Charging Stations Would Meet Long-Distance Travel Needs for Battery Electric Vehicles in the Top 100 U.S. Metropolitan Areas, According to Navigant Research

Navigant analysis provides a benchmark for stakeholders looking to develop a nationwide fast charging network

BOULDER, Colo.--()--A new report from Navigant Research illustrates where to place direct current (DC) charging stations in the United States in a staged rollout, using a series of maps that show coverage for long-distance drivers of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) along the East and West Coasts and throughout the country.

Over the next 10 years, the U.S. BEV population is expected to grow rapidly, with long-range BEVs becoming an increasingly large percentage of total BEVs in use. Drivers of these long-range BEVs are expected to boost demand for DC fast charging at much higher power levels, and stakeholders have begun developing plans to deploy networks of high-power DC fast chargers throughout the United States. “Nationwide access to high-power fast charging can be achieved with several hundred stations, but this requires collaboration from automakers, charging networks, and utilities,” says Lisa Jerram, principal research analyst with Navigant Research. “It is important that individual stations be placed in optimal locations for the greatest benefit, and that they be linked together in a single network for ease of use by BEV drivers.”
