The energy content of biogas is directly proportional to the methane concentration, so by removing the carbon dioxide in the upgrading process, the energy content of the gas is increased. Just one cubic meter of biogas at 60% methane content converts to 6.7 kWh of energy.
Water scrubbing is the oldest process used for removing carbon dioxide from biogas to form high-quality biomethane. In this process, water is used as a solvent for removing the carbon dioxide. As carbon dioxide solubility is much higher in water than methane's, the resulting gas leaving the scrubber has an increased methane content. The biomethane thus produced is around 98% pure. During the process, any traces of hydrogen sulfide are also removed, unlike other processes that require pre-treatment for removal of hydrogen sulfide.

The global biogas upgrading equipment market by chemical scrubber is growing at a CAGR of close to 9%. Chemical scrubber technology is similar to water scrubber technology as both use solvents to dissolve the carbon dioxide. In this process, also known as amine scrubbing, the most commonly used solvents are: diethanolamine, diglycolamine, and monoethanolamine. These chemicals dissolve the carbon dioxide, after which CO₂ chemically reacts with the amine solution. The chemical reaction is highly selective, and the methane absorption is low. This results in higher level of biomethane purity, which is generally about 99%. However, the chemicals used in the processes require a large amount of heat.
This technology has the lowest methane slip, which is generally about less than 1%, thus making it highly efficient. However, it has high capital and operational requirements making it suitable for use in medium and large upgrading plants.
Global biogas upgrading equipment market by PSA
The global biogas upgrading equipment market by pressure swing adsorption (PSA) is growing at a CAGR of over 8%. PSA separates carbon dioxide from biogas by adsorption of the CO₂ molecules on a surface under increased pressure. The commonly used adsorbents are molecular sieves, activated carbon and zeolites.
The temperature used during the separation process is constant, which makes the process more efficient. The purity of the upgraded biogas is around 98%. The process consumes constant energy but requires higher capital investment. During the upgrading process, there is 2% biomethane slip into the environment. “The technological advancements and simple construction of this equipment have allowed its use in compact projects and the process reduces the cost involved in the installation. Moreover, it also removes any nitrogen and oxygen present in the gas,” says Sayani.
