AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Texas State Comptroller Glenn Hegar today announced the Water-Efficient Products Sales Tax Holiday scheduled for Memorial Day weekend.
“Ensuring Texans have an adequate supply of water is fundamental to job creation and the future growth of our economy,” Hegar said. “Conservation is one of many tools we have to ensure water supply meets demand. The Water-Efficient Products Sales Tax Holiday helps Texas consumers be water smart and save money both indoors and outdoors.”
This year’s sales tax holiday begins on Saturday, May 28, and continues through Monday, May 30, 2016. Certain water-efficient and water-conserving products, like rain collectors, mulch and plants, will be exempt from state sales tax. The Water-Efficient Products Sales Tax Holiday is the result of legislation passed by Rep. Drew Darby (R., San Angelo) and Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa (D., McAllen) during the 84th Legislative Session. Members of the Texas Nursery & Landscape Association and the Texas Retailers Association advocated for the measure, understanding the positive impact conservation incentives can have on the state’s overall effort to meet Texas’ growing water needs.
“Comptroller Hegar, Sen. Hinojosa and Rep. Darby have shown true leadership in empowering Texas consumers to make water smart choices,” said Amy Graham, president of the Texas Nursery & Landscape Association and the Texas Water Smart Foundation. “Memorial Day Weekend is a great time to finish up spring planting, and this sales tax holiday is a great incentive to encourage homeowners to learn more about water conservation and to take meaningful steps to save water.”
George Kelemen, President and CEO of the Texas Retailers Association, said, “TRA is proud to have supported Senator Hinojosa, Representative Darby and Comptroller Hegar in their efforts to bring this important issue through the legislative and regulatory process. Our members appreciate the opportunity not only to offer their customers price savings but also to focus the public’s attention on water conservation across the state. This sales tax holiday protects our natural resources while benefiting Texas businesses, homeowners, and families.”
