Increased demand for civil-commercial applications
Improvements in technology and economical acquisition and operations have led to the rapid demand for commercial UAVs. Until 2015, most of the commercial UAVs in use were small multirotor UAVs or single-rotor helicopter-configured UAVs. They are highly beneficial for monitoring oil and gas pipelines, aerial photography, and wind farm monitoring owing to their high stability and hover capabilities.
Suitability of VTOL UAVs for urban applications
VTOL UAVs can take off and land without a runway. The ability of these UAVs, compared to other fixed-wing UAVs, makes it suitable for operation even in urban areas. Fixed-wing UAVs need a track or certain length of open space. Therefore, in most of the cases, these fixed-wing UAVs cannot be launched from a rooftop or constrained areas. Whereas VTOL UAVs can be launched from a roof, vehicle or even hand launched. Utilization of VTOL UAVs for military applications
In recent years, advancement in technology has allowed UAVs to overcome critical deficiencies (such as navigational issues and automated operation) and become an integral part of the mainstream military applications. For example, UAVs that are used for military operations feature small warheads, communication link over vast distances, and multiple sensors including an infrared camera and jammer payloads. UAVs used for 3D photogrammetric missions (such as on Interspect UAS B 3.1 Flying Lab) have a remote sensing platform equipped with a DSLR camera, humidity meter, and many more additional features.
The primary uses of UAVs in the military are ISR and spy missions, communications applications, search and rescue, security, disaster management, and monitoring. They also find their applications in the field of war field management, aerial reconnaissance, and for alerting against chemical, biological, and nuclear threats.
In most of these applications, UAVs have to be deployed at a short notice, from any location, as and when required. Conventional fixed-wing UAVs (that need runways) are not of great use in difficult terrains or remote areas. Therefore, the use of VTOL UAVs for military applications has largely increased because of its easy deployment from any terrain or mission areas.
