AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--National Instruments Corporation (Nasdaq: NATI), the provider of platform-based systems that enable engineers and scientists to solve the world’s greatest engineering challenges, announced today that Dr. Gerhard Fettweis, Vodafone Chair Professor at the Technical University of Dresden (TU Dresden), was appointed to the NI board of directors.

Since 1994, Fettweis has held the Vodafone Chair at TU Dresden, with 20 companies from Asia, Europe and the United States sponsoring his research on wireless transmission and chip design. He coordinates two German Science Foundation centers in Dresden and the 5G Lab Germany. As an IEEE Fellow and a member of acatech, the German National Academy of Science and Engineering, Fettweis has received many awards such as the Stuart Meyer Memorial Award from the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society and the Alcatel-Lucent Innovation Award. He has been involved in starting 10 companies and participated in more than 100 research projects over the past 20 years. Fettweis is also a research scientist with International Computer Science Institute (ICSI), a leading independent nonprofit center for research in computer science, affiliated with University of California, Berkeley.

Since 2012, Fettweis has coordinated the Cluster of Excellence ‘Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden’ in which more than 300 scientists from more than 20 countries explore new technologies for future microchips in nine different research paths. The Collaborative Research Center for Highly Adaptive Energy-Efficient Computing, also coordinated by Fettweis since 2011, is integrated in the Cluster of Excellence as one of its research paths.
Fettweis studied electrical engineering at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1990, and holds an honorary doctorate from Technical University Tampere of Finland.
