Kopin Unveils World’s Smallest Smart Glass Display

Kopin’s Vista Technology with Ultra-compact Display Modules to Enable Smart Eyewear Products that Consumers Want to Wear

Kopin Corporation announced the world’s smallest smart glass display on January 4, 2016, Westborough, Mass. At 2mm in in height, it allows makers of wearables to design less bulky, more fashionable smart eyewear. The 2mm displays will be demonstrated at CES®2016. A 4mm version of the display is shown here as part of Kopin’s own brand of cycling smart sunglasses. The display module is located in front of the lens, providing cyclists a head-up display for easy access to performance data. WESTBOROUGH, Mass.--()--Kopin Corporation (Nasdaq: KOPN), a leading developer of innovative wearable computing technologies and solutions, today announced the world’s smallest smart glass display. The PupilTM display module with only 2mm height is part of Kopin’s VistaTM portfolio of technologies featuring Kopin’s ultra-compact Cyberdisplay® LCD and miniature optics that project a high-resolution, high-brightness image comparable in size to a smart phone display. Using Kopin Vista technology, smart eyewear can look like a normal pair of glasses. The 2mm displays will be shown at CES®2016.

“Our Vista display modules have been optimally designed with an integrated optic, display, and backlight in a compact product-ready package, which provides an augmented reality experience with a vivid and bright sunlight-readable image while using minimal power,” said Yoichi Iba, Kopin’s Chief Optics Scientist and inventor of the Pupil optics. “Look in the mirror at your eye and now imagine a display the size of your pupil which provides see-through/see-around viewing without the higher power consumption of other see-through technologies. That is what we achieved when we introduced the 4mm display module last year. With today’s debut of 2mm technology, Kopin has set yet another standard for world’s smallest display module.”

To demonstrate the power of Kopin’s Vista display technology in a smart eyewear design that meets aesthetic and functional requirements, Kopin unveiled its own brand of cycling smart sunglasses -- Solos TM at last September’s Interbike trade show to great reviews. The stylish Solos eyewear incorporates the 4mm version of Kopin’s Pupil display module in front of the lens, providing cyclists head-up display for easy access to performance data.

Kopin also created a very stylish concept eyeglass with a 4mm version of Pupil display module imbedded behind the eyeglass frame and totally invisible from outside. The result: smart eyewear that is as fashionable and familiar looking as it is functional.

“Kopin believes head-worn devices will be the ultimate wearable device because most human senses are around our head,” said Dr. John C.C. Fan, President and CEO of Kopin Corporation. “To be widely accepted by users, these devices should be stylish, lightweight, comfortable, and, most importantly, a familiar look. Our super compact Vista products allow the design of the smart eyewear that meets these requirements. Whether you are protecting the free world, checking your warehouse inventory, monitoring your heart rate while cycling, or just looking up directions to a new restaurant – Kopin technology will allow us all to keep our heads up and take it all in.”

Today’s announcement expands the Vista product portfolio available to OEM customers, which includes PupilTM and PearlTM display modules. The Pupil modules are intended for consumer eyeware products and the Pearl modules are for enterprise headsets. Pupil modules are offered in two resolutions: WQVGA (428 x 240) and nHD (640 x 360). Pearl displays are offered in three resolutions: WQVGA (428 x 240), nHD (640 x 360) and WVGA (854 x 480).

The Vista portfolio of technologies including the 2-mm Pupil module and stylish concept eyewear will be showcased at Kopin’s exclusive VIP reception – Wearables: The Missing Pieces – in Kopin’s suite at the Palazzo during CES. In addition, Solos cycling smart sunglasses will be exhibited at Booth 74334 in the Fitness and Technology Market Place during CES. Additional information is available at events@kopin.com.
