Cancun Ranks as World’s Most Expensive Destination to Spend New Year’s Eve 2015

NEW YORK--()--Cancun, the Mexican Caribbean’s popular resort destination, is the most expensive locale in the world in which to spend this New Year's Eve. That’s the finding of a new survey from

The survey specifically looked at 30 major destinations around the world and then established the rate for the cheapest available double room for each one. The timeframe used to compare them was December 30, 2015 to January 2, 2016 (3 nights). To ensure an apples-to-apples comparison, the survey considered only hotels with a central location, rated a minimum of 3 stars and possessing a positive overall average rating from past guests.

To stay in Cancun this year end into the New Year, visitors can expect to pay $311 nightly for the most affordable room. When compared to the amount they would have to spend in general during the month of January, that figure represents an increase of 274%.

Trailing in the survey’s number two spot by only a few dollars is Dubai. The United Arab Emirates’ largest city, Dubai ranks second most expensive worldwide with an overnight rate of $302 (176% more than usual). Florida’s popular resort town of Miami Beach rounds out the Top 3 podium with a per-night rate of $286, an increase of almost 300% compared to regular rates.

In contrast, Moscow is surprisingly affordable. It ranks just 27th out of the 30 destinations considered. A rate of $55 for the least expensive room puts it low on the list. At the very bottom of the rankings are Bogota, Shanghai and Buenos Aires. There, travelers should be able to find a room for about $40 per night over New Year’s Eve.
