SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Simply Hired, the largest independent job search engine with properties in 24 countries and 12 languages, today released its Simply Hired U.S. Employment Outlook for October 2015. The report analyzes Simply Hired’s comprehensive index of millions of online job listings in every occupation to provide detailed insight into national and local job trends. According to the latest findings, nationwide job listing fell 3.52% between September 2015 and October 2015. This is the second consecutive month of decline in U.S. job listings, although job listings remain up 10.98% from January of this year.
The Simply Hired U.S. Employment Outlook also provides comprehensive data on job openings, growth and employers by U.S. metro. The report shows that job listings decreased in all 25 largest U.S. metros in October 2015. The largest declines were seen in Sacramento, CA (-5.15% month-over-month growth) and Denver, CO (-5.07%). Phoenix, AZ posted the smallest decline with a -1.06% dip.
“Although job listings were down 3.52% month-over-month in October, there are currently more than 4.5 million open jobs available across the U.S., a significant increase of 10.98% compared to the number available in January 2015,” said James Beriker, President & CEO of Simply Hired. “The holiday season brings opportunities for retail work, and major retail companies like Walmart and Toys-R-Us are going public with their commitment to turn seasonal workers into full-time employees.”
Industry Spotlight: Retail
The Simply Hired U.S. Employment Outlook shows that retail job opportunities are surging as the country moves into peak holiday shopping months. While the retail sector typically accounts for 12% of U.S. jobs, listings increase over 50% from September to November to represent nearly 20% of all job openings nationwide. More than half (55%) of these new listings are for retail sales associates and cashiers. Other retail jobs in demand include: shift leaders and managers; stock clerks; merchandise display staff; and loss prevention staff. The cities with the most retail jobs include New York; Los Angeles; San Francisco; Chicago; and Boston.
Long a staple of seasonal retail hiring, the sales associate role is changing to meet the new demands of the retail industry. Companies are requiring seasonal employees to use more diverse technology, and searching for general comfort with technology (over specific skills) among job candidates. Requirements such as ‘ability to use technology’ or ‘familiar with technology’ have tripled in retail job descriptions over the past 2 years, whereas ‘ability to use a cash register’ declined by 45%.
Retail wages vary dramatically by role and geography. The average nationwide hourly wage for a retail worker is $10.16. The highest paying jobs in demand now include shift leaders who average $24.24 per hour in New York and $23.38 per hour in the San Francisco Bay Area. Retail sales associates make a nationwide-high of $15.00 per hour in Los Angeles and $12.37 per hour in the Bay Area.
