The architectural and environmental success of The Bullitt Center in Seattle has made heavy timber office buildings a topic of great interest within the design community. Now, with ground broken on a new 7-story example in Minneapolis, cost-effectiveness can be added to the potential benefits achieved with a mass timber structural solution. Presented by the timber specialists responsible for such iconic structures as the Richmond Olympic Oval, this presentation explores the aesthetic potential and efficiency of nail laminated timber systems, while touching on relevant engineering, manufacturing and erection techniques used in other timber projects. 1 AIA/CES LU (HSW) or PDH credit. Panel Discussion:

Urban Sustainability, Rural Prosperity

October 20, 2105 / 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Central

Register to attend or live stream this Wood Week Panel Discussion on mass timber and green building, featuring:

  • U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell
  • Michael Green, Architect
  • Dr. Jim Bowyer, Dovetail Partners
  • Tim Punke, Plum Creek

There is growing recognition that expanded use of wood products can reduce the environmental impacts of buildings while strengthening rural economies. In 2011, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack announced USDA's strategy to promote the use of wood as a green building material. In 2014, he announced a significant partnership with WoodWorks, stating that: “Building stronger markets for innovative new wood products supports sustainable forestry, helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and puts rural America at the forefront of an emerging industry.”

Attend or live stream this Wood Week panel discussion to learn more about factors driving the desire to use wood in a wider range of applications, and how this is being realized through both policy decisions and the expanded use of next-generation lumber and mass timber products. The discussion will be held in Washington, DC, and is being hosted by WoodWorks partners, reThink Wood and the American Wood Council (AWC).

In addition to speaking at the event, WoodWorks is available (via help@woodworks.org and regional staff to provide technical support regarding the use of wood in non-residential and multi-family buildings.
