SAN LEANDRO, Calif.--()--OSIsoft, a global leader in operational intelligence, today announced the award of a grant from the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) to Turkish electrical utility company, Kayseri ve Civarı Elektrik Türk A.Ş. (KCETAŞ), to investigate the deployment of the PI System software as a real-time data infrastructure. The US funded grant is aimed at facilitating US trade and to help Turkey improve the electrical transmission infrastructure. By enabling real-time smart grid monitoring the project aims to reduce peak power load requirements and to improve the generation, transmission and distribution resources of the KCETAŞ electricity network.

For over 15 years utility companies worldwide have been deploying the PI System software from OSIsoft to connect sensor-based data, assets, process and people to enable real-time decision support and operational intelligence. Electrical distribution grids are challenged with delivering continuous power in light of changing solar, wind and customer demand throughout the day. Electrical distribution grids that can better understand and react to daily fluctuations, real-time events and predict future events are able to provide a better quality of service, and lower supply costs through improved targeting of capital investments and reduced servicing costs.

The Data Integration and the Automated Demand Side Management Pilot Project (ADSM) at KCETAŞ is aimed at providing a data infrastructure to enable better understanding of the availability and demand for electricity. The project will investigate and demonstrate the ability of OSIsoft’s PI System to access, collect and integrate distribution Operations Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT) data into one common environment and establish a standards-based integration strategy for data mining and visualization tools for decision support. The project will establish the optimal strategy to extract, integrate and visualize data and deploy enabling capabilities in future smart grid projects.

“Data is the key to improvement and optimization,” said Martin Otterson, Senior Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Industry at OSIsoft. “Today OSIsoft has hundreds of electrical distribution grids worldwide deploying the PI System to deliver operational intelligence. These deployments enable utility companies to learn from historical data, have real-time insight into the state of their utility, and predict demand and potential outages.”

“USTDA is pleased to partner with OSIsoft and KCETAŞ on this project, which we believe could have a transformative effect not only in Kayseri, but across the entire Turkish distribution grid,” said USTDA Director Leocadia I. Zak. “By successfully demonstrating the utility of this leading U.S. technology, we hope that OSIsoft and other U.S. firms may gain greater access to the vast smart grid project opportunities in Turkey.”
