PALO ALTO, Calif.--()--Pluribus Networks, the company that advances software-defined networking (SDN) through the industry’s most programmable, open source-based operating system, Netvisor®, announced today that it has been selected as a finalist in this year’s exclusive “SDN Idol” competition being conducted by Open Networking Summits during its annual event currently underway in Santa Clara, CA. “SDN Idol” is an annual competition which recognizes those networking leaders that provide the most innovative and valuable approaches to SDN. Pluribus Networks submitted its capabilities for real-time data flow visibility and the associated analytics for consideration in this competition.

Based upon an open distributed architecture, Pluribus Networks’ open networking solution (“Open Netvisor”) is the industry’s only high performance, scalable SDN solution that is fully backward compatible with existing layer-2 and layer-3 networks. Whereas most competitive SDN offerings focus on the separation of control and data planes using the OpenFlow protocol, Pluribus tightly integrates the server and the switch functionality to provide application and full end-point visibility and flow level control over any application flow. Compatible with the needs of traditional NetOps and DevOps teams, Pluribus’ visibility and analytics allow every data flow across the entire fabric to be managed, captured and/or observed in real-time to enable various performance and security impacting conditions to be studied and optimized.

As part of its goal for truly open solutions, Pluribus Networks also recently announced that its leadership Open Netvisor operating system will become available on Dell’s family of ONIE based Open Networking Switches in the fall of 2015, joining their existing support for other open platforms such as those from Super Micro Computer. The Pluribus Open Netvisor Linux (ONVL) package for DELL combines all of the open benefits of Linux with plug-and-play, application-aware fabric, advanced network flow programming and embedded analytics and visibility capabilities.

“The data center network has become a mission-critical superhighway infrastructure that services and regulates this increasing level of traffic and connectivity. IT managers are looking for networking solutions that will provide the agility and application-awareness required to improve the economics, foster faster innovation and shift towards a fully software-defined data center,” wrote Don Root, Enterprise Solutions Marketing at Dell, in a recent blog post.

“The Open Netvisor distributed control plane and fabric-wide programmability allows SDN to offer new capabilities around analytics, compliance and security with 100% visibility of applications and end-points instead of using traditional sampling-based approaches,” said Sunay Tripathi, Founder and CTO of Pluribus Networks. “Traditional approaches using TAPs or sampling-based monitoring fabric have not been able to defend against new threat vectors and Netvisor’s distributed analytics and dynamic threat response keeps up with exponentially growing network capacities and Virtual Machine density. We are thrilled to have been recognized for these values by our selection as a finalist.”
