CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Athletico Physical Therapy, a leader in head injury and concussion management, is excited to announce the availability of Brain Network Activation (BNA™) Testing, which will be used to measure brain function before and after concussion. Effective immediately, BNA™ Testing will be available across the greater Chicago area exclusively through Athletico’s Concussion Management Program. The 30-minute test provides information to help physicians assess brain activity and guide a patient through the recovery of a brain injury. BNA™ adds an objective layer of information to the Athletico Concussion Management Program aimed at safely returning patients to their sport or activity.
“Until now, concussions were assessed only by subjective questions, symptom evaluation or observed behavior. BNA™ is unlike any other available technology and allows us to understand how the brain is actually functioning at various stages of recovery from an injury. This adds an important layer of objective information to the decision making process,” said Allan Van Every, vice president of clinical operations, Athletico. “Concussions are a serious injury amongst student athletes, and this test will allow medical professionals and parents to feel more confident about clearing them to return to play.”
Athletico will offer BNA™ Testing to provide a benchmark for individuals in a healthy, non-concussed state, such as at the start of the sports season or at any time during the preseason. Subsequently, the test would be performed in the event of a head injury to assess brain activity post-concussion as compared to the individual’s healthy benchmark test. The results of the BNA™ test provide objective insight to help medical professionals make better informed decisions, such as when to return to activities and sports.
The BNA™ system, recently cleared by United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will be used for the assessment of brain function in 14 to 24 year olds. Using a 64-electrode net placed on the head, BNA™ analyzes the brain’s electrical activity while simple tasks are performed.
The BNA™ test is offered at the Aurora, Bannockburn, LaGrange, Niles, and Orland Park Athletico facilities. For an appointment or more information visit www.athletico.com/BNA.
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head. It can also be caused by a fall or a blow to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every year between 1.6 and 3.8 million people suffer a concussion while participating in a sport or recreational activity. Signs and symptoms of concussion generally fall into four categories: physical, cognitive, emotional, and sleep. These symptoms can be wide-ranging, including headache, dizziness, vomiting, drowsiness and trouble concentrating, among others. Anyone experiencing symptoms of a concussion or who suspects a concussion should seek immediate medical attention.
