PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in the UK has achieved dramatic improvements in healthcare IT by implementing solutions from RES Software, the leader in digital workspace technology.
In the past, Moorfields struggled to run IT services unobtrusively in the background. Like many hospitals around the world, Moorfields experienced delays and frustrations that interfered with clinician duties and adversely impacted patient engagement.
Today, however, RES Software forms the foundation on which Moorfields deploys and runs IT services and applications. This has acted as a catalyst for a turnaround in IT services that is helping the hospital improve the quality of patient care.
“RES has helped our IT group deliver better service on a consistent basis,” says Owen Brady, Director of Information Technology, at Moorfields. “Most of our people, from the grassroots to the executive board, now accept the level of service we’re delivering with RES as a matter of fact. They don’t struggle with IT anymore, so they don’t even have to think about it.”
For example, Moorfields has been able to successfully and securely support remote access to sensitive patient information using context-aware technology from RES. With role-based permissions defined upfront, the system now in place enables medical and non-medical staff to quickly log onto a hospital portal and do their jobs wherever they are. Logins, in fact, are now 10 times faster, and the user experience is consistent across all facilities and locations within the hospital system.
RES Software has also helped Moorfields meet regulatory requirements set by National Health System in the UK. Controls embedded in RES Software solutions have been instrumental in ensuring that the hospital meets the required levels of compliance in the IGToolkit – an online system where trusts assess themselves against Department of Health Information Governance policies and standards.
“With RES,” says Ellen Derrico, Senior Director of Product Marketing at RES Software, “Moorfields Eye Hospital has transformed IT from an obstacle into an enabler for faster, better, more compliant, and more effective healthcare.”
According to an IT progress report recently released for the monthly meeting of the Moorfields board of directors, “IT has been continually improving and redesigning service in line with industry standards and ITIL good practice. This has resulted in a consistent level of service to end users, supported by robust, resilient back-end services.”
The same report cites a dramatic improvement in IT maturity for the hospital – which moved to level 4 on Gartner’s IT maturity scale. By achieving this level – reserved for organizations that are service-aligned, customer focused, and capable of acting as trusted IT service providers – the IT groups at Moorfields have generated a tremendous amount of goodwill between IT and the clinical side of the health system. This bodes well for the future. “Without RES, it would have been very difficult for us to achieve level 4 status,” says Brady. “Now we’re prepared to take on more challenges moving forward as we seek to leverage IT to drive even higher levels of efficiency and improved patient care.”
