TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Accenture (NYSE:ACN) has been awarded a one-year, strategy consulting contract to continue its successful outreach attracting foreign companies to Tokyo’s Special Zone for Asian Headquarters, helping spur the city’s economic growth and competitiveness. This is the third, consecutive contract award to Accenture for this work in the last two years.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) has a goal of attracting 50 foreign companies to locate their regional headquarters or research and development centers to the Special Zone by the end of March 2017. Accenture has successfully recruited 31 high value businesses hubs since 2013. Accenture Strategy will lead the continued effort to identify companies and their fit in the Special Zone, as well as support those incoming businesses as they establish bases there.
Major Pharmaceutical Company Successfully Recruited
Accenture successfully recruited Aspen Pharmacare, a major pharmaceutical company that brought its technology development business for the Japanese pharmaceutical market about two years ago. The company considered market size and business opportunities for foreign companies in Japan before deciding to locate in the Special Zone.
Aspen Pharmacare established a new entity, Aspen Japan, to develop formulation and tablet technology to meet the needs of Japanese patients and doctors. Aspen Japan also will improve the company’s research and development to include clinical testing, drug applications and post-market surveillance specific to Japan to serve as a business expansion hub for Asia.

Tokyo’s presence in the global pharmaceuticals market will undoubtedly grow through the various medical treatment initiatives in the Special Zone. Tokyo’s Special Zone for Asian Headquarters
The “Special Zone” is designed to increase foreign investment by offering companies that locate there substantial deregulations as well as preferential tax treatment, fiscal and financial support from the national government and the TMG. The Special Zone includes areas around the Shinjuku, Shibuya, Shinagawa and Tamachi stations, Central Tokyo and the waterfront, as well as the vacant lots around the Haneda airport. Companies looking into entering the Japanese market or expanding operations are provided support by Accenture free of charge during the decision-making period. The support also includes management consulting as well as individual support geared toward the optimal use of various investment incentive programs.
