TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--TransCore Link Logistics Canadian Freight Index volumes receded in February following last year’s unprecedented volumes, but remained higher than prior years. Even with a shortened month and fewer shipping days, February’s daily loads, taken as an average, were two percent higher than in January.
Compared to the lofty highs reported in 2014, load volumes this February fell 20 percent year-over-year. Month-over-month volumes were down eight percent.
There were no obvious shifts in regional distribution of cross-border loads coming into Canada compared to January. However, regional shifts for loads leaving Canada were observed. Compared to last month, loads leaving Ontario decreased 10 percent, and loads leaving western Canada jumped 17 percent.
Cross-border load volumes averaged 71 percent of the total, a decrease of two percent compared to January. Despite the lower Canadian dollar, outbound load volumes decreased by nine percent compared to the same period last year. Inbound loads decreased by about a third year-over-year.
Intra-Canada load volumes represented 26 percent of the total volumes for February and decreased 14 percent year-over-year.
Equipment postings dipped two percent month-over-month and jumped 16 percent year-over-year. The equipment-to-load ratio increased to 1.90 from 1.79 in January and from 1.36 compared to February 2014. Outbound equipment availability is at the same level as 2014 while inbound equipment postings have increased by over 20 percent.
