REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--C3 Energy hosted more than 100 data scientists, product managers, investors, engineers, and entrepreneurs at its Redwood City, Calif., headquarters last week for a Data Science for Sustainability meet up to discuss machine learning and data analysis for energy systems.
C3 Energy Chief Data Scientist Zico Kolter provided an in-depth look into research around producing probabilistic forecasts for energy systems, spanning demand forecasting, price forecasting, and renewable forecasting.
“Machine learning takes a straightforward concept—using mathematical equations that can learn from data—to refine complex big data sets and reveal meaningful insights. It’s a technique that has been used commonly at leading technologies companies, like Google, Amazon, Netflix, or Twitter, but its applications for utilities have the potential to revolutionize the modern energy system,” said Kolter.
As an industry-recognized expert on machine learning and a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon, Kolter earned his doctorate in computer science at Stanford University and conducted extensive postdoctoral research at the MIT Computer Science Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. He has worked on problems ranging from energy analysis of homes and buildings, probabilistic forecasting of energy demand and generation, wide-area control of grid generation, and assessing asset risk from weather events in distribution networks.
