DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Xolair, a drug used to treat allergic asthma in adults and children 12 years and older, has been linked to significant health issues such as mini-strokes, heart attacks and blood clots, the national law firm of Baron and Budd reports. In September, 2014, The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined that a warning label should be added to the drug to inform patients of the potential dangers.
Xolair is the brand name of the drug omalizumab, which was developed from DNA extracted from the Chinese hamster. Developers modified the DNA to help supplement the genetic material normally produced in a patient’s immune system. The injectable medication is designed to treat those who test positive for allergens in the air that occur year-round and suffer recurrent asthma as a result. People who do not typically respond well to traditional asthma medications are considered candidates for the drug.
However, several potentially serious health issues have been associated with the use of Xolair. Studies have shown patients may be at risk for blood clots in the lungs and veins, transient ischemic attacks (also referred to as mini-strokes) and anaphylaxis, an allergic issue that can make breathing extremely difficult. According to researchers, patients are not only at risk immediately after taking the drug, but may also experience problems up to a year after stopping their treatment.
“There has not been a recall of Xolair as of this date, but evidence shows the drug can be extremely dangerous for patients,” said Russell Budd, president and managing shareholder of the national law firm of Baron and Budd. “We want to help people who have been injured by these injections to receive compensation."
Plaintiffs in the Xolair class action lawsuit believe that Genentech and Novartis, the injection’s manufacturer, knew about its serious risks but failed to provide adequate warnings, thereby putting many people at risk.
If you or someone close to you took Xolair and suffered problems related to blood vessels in the heart or brain, please contact Baron & Budd’s Xolair lawyers at email@example.com or 1.866.472.9108.
