BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--XL Hybrids, Inc., the pioneering developer of hybrid electric powertrain technology for commercial and municipal fleets, today announced the successful installation of its award-winning XL3 Hybrid Electric Drive System in passenger vans for Lasell College in Newton, Massachusetts. The vans will provide a 25 percent increase in miles per gallon and 20 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions to the private institution.
The project was funded by the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources as part of the Massachusetts Clean Cities initiative, and will include passenger vans, as well as a shuttle bus scheduled to be on the road in March.
“This project with Mass. Clean Cities allows Lasell College to benefit from the same XL Hybrids technology being used successfully by leading commercial fleets, including Coca-Cola and FedEx, and municipal fleets such as The City of Boston,” said Clay Siegert, vice president and co-founder of XL Hybrids. “The vans are the college’s first alternative fuel vehicles and we’re confident Lasell will see immediate savings in fuel and vehicle maintenance.”
“College President Michael Alexander signed a climate action plan which has sharpened our focus on sustainability efforts and we hope to deploy more XL Hybrids vehicles in the future,” said Roxey Connelly, manager of plant operations for Lasell College. “In fact, we received the Newton Needham Chamber’s New & Green Business Awards last year for our sustainability efforts, including the installation of LED lights on campus and a composting program in the dining halls. The College also received the Newton Preservation Award for cutting energy use in half by renovating our Caroline Carpenter House.”
