Festive Seasonal Events Kick Off the 2014 Holiday Season

DALLAS--()--From intricate and decorative castles, to artistic landscapes and gingerbread musical instruments, Omni Hotels & Resorts has made gingerbread-themed competitions a series of coveted national events. Since 1992, people have traveled far and wide to attend The Omni Grove Park Inn National Gingerbread Competition, and each year has brought added creativity amongst participants. And for the first time ever, Omni is taking this beloved tradition across the country, expanding the gingerbread house competition to Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa and Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.

The Omni Grove Park Inn Hosts The National Competition – Asheville, NC

With its first gingerbread competition launched at The Omni Grove Park Inn more than 22 years ago, the annual competition remains a beloved celebration that officially kicks off the holidays at the historic resort. This year’s event is the largest gingerbread house competition in the country and started on Monday, November 17, with baking enthusiasts competing from across the country for a chance to win the national grand prize of more than $7,500 in cash and prizes.

These one-of-a-kind designs take hundreds of work hours to create and are constructed of entirely edible materials, of which 75 percent must be gingerbread. The gingerbread creations will be judged by an elite panel including world-renowned pastry chefs, the curator from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the author of “Making Great Gingerbread Houses,” and more. Additionally, in keeping with the holiday spirit of giving, half of all the parking proceeds, a $10 fee, will be donated to six local non-profit organizations. In 2013, The Omni Park Grove Inn was able to gift $64,000 to the local community.

Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa: an Austin Twist to the Traditional Gingerbread House – Austin, TX

Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa puts a unique peppermint twist on its Gingerbread House Competition and expects it to be an over-the-top musical wonderland. Celebrating Austin’s unique musical landscape, this year’s competition theme is “Austin: Live Music Capital of the World.” Austin baking enthusiasts will alter the traditional gingerbread theme to “rock-out” their signature gingerbread houses showcasing popular performers, music venues, and perhaps even guitars and musical instruments. All entries will celebrate and relate to Austin’s unique live music community.

Grand prizes include a $1,000 prize check for the adult category; a $1,000 prize check for the professional/corporate category, plus $1,000 donation to Make-A-Wish® Central & South Texas in their company’s name. Teen and youth categories with monetary prizes are also included, in addition to the Social Media People’s Choice Award of dinner for two at 8212 Wine Bar & Grill or a round of golf on one of the resort’s four championship courses

Noteworthy judges include Steven Stellingwerf, author of “The Gingerbread Book,” who is lending his expertise to the Hill Country resort in addition to The Omni Grove Park Inn this year; Kathrin Brewer, Make-A-Wish® Central & South Texas, President and CEO; Susie Ellwood, Austin American-Statesman Publisher, and Allison Mack, Owner & Co-founder of Austin Moms Blog. Gingerbread creations will be judged on December 2, in conjunction with the holiday tree lighting ceremony and a dessert reception from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Omni La Costa Resort & Spa Shows Gingerbread Creativity – Carlsbad, CA

Gingerbread architects in California have been given the challenge to throw their icing bags in the ring, launching their first gingerbread competition. Omni La Costa Resort & Spa invites bakers and gingerbread enthusiasts to create their own signature gingerbread houses for a chance to win a sweet $1,000 in cash and prizes, and, most importantly, bragging rights for a year. Additionally, Omni La Costa Resort & Spa will make a $1,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad in their name. A creativity prize will be awarded of an overnight stay for two in luxurious accommodations at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, as well as a People’s Choice award of a dinner for two at the acclaimed BlueFire Grill.

Gingerbread houses will be on display in the resort’s lobby for the community to view. A panel of judges comprised of Omni La Costa’s culinary team, southern California’s top food writers and bloggers, and Omni La Costa’s Managing Director Larry Magor, will judge the top entries with winners announced at the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on December. 5.
