Stepping Stories™ Build Social and Emotional Skills Through Personalized Children’s Books

With its library of books and team of experts, Stepping Stories employ a research-based approach to easing childhood transitions for parents and children

TRUCKEE, Calif.--()--Stepping Stories™, essential tools to help children develop social and emotional skills through personalized stories, today unveiled its library of books and team of experts. Stepping Stories currently offer a library of eBooks or soft cover printed books for personalization on its website, including books on Food Allergies, Death of a Pet, Back to School, New Sibling, and Sleep with many more titles to come over the next few months. The company has recruited a highly qualified team of childhood development experts who helped create and curate content.

“Co-founder Jen McVey and I started the company based on our own personal experiences raising toddlers,” said President Susan McCormick. “I wanted to wean my son off his pacifier and Jen was managing her son’s severe food allergies. To help our children through these childhood challenges, we used personalized stories to communicate to our children at their level, and we had great results. Now, we want to share what we learned about the power of this type of storytelling with other moms who are having similar experiences.”

Helping Children Along their Development Path

Stepping Stories are invested in a child’s development, making it easy and enjoyable for parents to teach life lessons to their children. Whether a child is dealing with a tough topic like death or just trying to establish a bedtime routine, Stepping Stories use a personalized storyline to engage children and prepare them for change. By placing a child into the story and allowing parents to personalize the narrative, Stepping Stories are able to teach children about childhood transitions and experiences in a powerful way.

The Stepping Stories team of experts includes Psychologist Dr. Susan Lipkins, Naturopathic Doctor Stephenie Riley, as well as Therapist Julia Marx. The company will be expanding its team of experts in the coming months.

Rooted in Established Theories of Child Development

To teach children social and emotional skills and help them through challenging transitions, the Stepping Stories team built on over 80 years of child development research to craft tools that are both effective and engaging.

  • Personalization: Since young children are self-focused, Stepping Stories are personalized to make them engaging and relatable. More specifically, Stepping Stories cast the child as the hero in each story and also offer the option to upload a child’s photo.
  • Comprehension: Stepping Stories use language that speaks to children on their level, so they can easily understand the message. The text and illustrations are simple, direct and designed to be seen and heard over and over again.
  • Empowerment: Through repeated exposure, children gain the ability to repeat actions, and in turn, change their outlook or behavior. When children understand the change that is coming, they gain mastery over what is expected of them. As a result, they feel empowered, confident, excited and ready for their next developmental step.

Founded by Moms to Help Families Worldwide

Stepping Stories were founded by two moms who created these tools from first-hand experience and necessity. About three years ago, President Susan McCormick was raising a challenging two-year old who needed to be weaned off his pacifier. Co-Founder Jen McVey was pregnant with her second child, whom she would soon discover had life-threatening allergies. They used personalized stories to help their children through these childhood challenges and had an epiphany that they wanted to share with other moms who were having similar experiences.

Ultimately, Susan and Jen decided to combine the knowledge they gathered during that process and develop a single toolkit to help parents with a range of parenting issues--from social, emotional development to allergy awareness and beyond.
