DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/l7m6lg/premium_lagers) has announced the addition of the "Premium Lagers, Beers & Ciders Market Update 2014" report to their offering.
In 2013, the UK market for premium lagers, beers and ciders was estimated to have grown by 0.5% in terms of value, representing the market's fourth consecutive year of annual value growth. It is important to note, however, that much of this growth can be attributed to the effect of high and rising alcohol duty levels in recent years.
In terms of volume sales, the market remains in long-term decline, with year-on-year contractions witnessed in total annual beer sales across both the on- and off-trade. There are, however, indications of an improvement in volume sales in the beer market, with a significant drop in the rate of decline recorded in 2013 - to below 1% in comparison to 2012-along with the recent announcement of major volume growth on both a quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year basis in Q2 2014.
The major factor for this improvement in trading conditions has been the announcement over the last two Governmental Budgets that the alcohol duty escalator for beer-which imposed annual duty increases of retail price index (RPI) inflation plus 2%, since its introduction in 2008 - was to be abolished, while duty on most ciders will be frozen, alongside the announcements in both the 2013 and 2014 Budgets of a cut in beer duty. This reduction in the level of beer duty, and the freeze in cider duty, should allow prices to fall slightly in many UK pubs, and will limit any further damage to consumer demand as result of increased beer and cider prices.
