PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--This November SCAN Health Plan Arizona is offering an array of free classes to help older adults improve their vitality and well-being. All events are open to SCAN members as well as the general public; however, space is limited, so pre-registration is required. Anyone interested in attending may call 855-901-7226, ext. 3420, to register. Classes are held at the SCAN Health Education Center at 1400 East Southern Avenue, Suite 735, in Tempe.
Artsy Smartsy – This series of classes focuses on art history, art making and storytelling in a variety of mediums. (There is a $5 materials fee per class.)
- Silk Painting will be taught on Monday, November 17, from 10 – 11:30 a.m.
- Fall Fabric Decoupage happens on Monday, November 24, from 10 – 11:30 a.m.
Bites and Stings – Most people living in the desert come in contact with insects and other little critters that also call the desert their home. This presentation will provide information about what they look like and what to do if you get bitten or stung. The class will be held on Wednesday, November 5, from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
De-Cluttering Paper Class – For people who tend to build up a lot of clutter because they can’t seem to get rid of papers and other mementos, this is the class to attend. Participants will learn tips about how to gain control over the clutter with a specific emphasis on controlling extra papers that can pile up. It will be held on Wednesday, November 12, from 1 – 3 p.m.
Green Living – For older adults who want to learn how to live a greener, more sustainable life, the Green Living Wellness class will be held on Monday, November 10, from 10 – 11 a.m. The class will focus on changes that can be made to improve the environment along with recipes for making green cleaning products.
Healthy Holiday Eating – This healthy cooking demonstration will provide attendees with tips about how to lighten their holiday meal without sacrificing their favorite traditions. It takes place on Wednesday, November 19, from 10:30 a.m. – noon.
Hot Topics in Nutrition: Expiration Dates – To ensure that good health is maintained through nutrition, SCAN Health Care Arizona offers “hot topics in nutrition.” This presentation, which focuses on the facts behind food expiration dates, will be held Wednesday, November 12, from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
Balanced Body – All abilities are welcomed in this gentle exercise class in which participants use chairs to strengthen their core and legs to improve balance and flexibility. The hour-long class is offered on four Tuesdays in November: 4, 11, 18 and 25 and begins at 9:15 a.m.
Matter of Balance – Because accidental falls can turn into serious injuries for seniors, this workshop is a must for those who want to learn skills to avoid falls. The class is held on four Tuesdays, November 4, 11, 18 and 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Tai-Chi & Qigong – These forms of moving energy are derived from Chinese martial arts. They consist of a series of slow, fluid movements done softly and gently using breathing techniques for healthy biorhythms. Participants can learn more about the benefits of this ancient Chinese fitness technique during the class that will be held on four Wednesdays, November 5, 12, 19 and 26, from 9 – 10 a.m.
Yoga – A gentle yoga class specifically designed for older adults with movement disorders. Participants will develop an overall sense of well-being, improved mobility and confidence. Classes take place on three Thursdays, November 6, 13 and 20, from 9:30 – 1 :30 a.m.
Zumba Plus – A Latin-inspired dance and fitness class for those 50 plus. Class will take place on three Thursdays, November 6, 13 and 20, from 10:45 – 11:45 a.m.
