MUFG Union Bank Names Art Smith Chief Communications and Marketing Officer for the Americas

SAN FRANCISCO--()--MUFG Union Bank, N.A., today announced that veteran marketing executive Arthur (Art) Smith has been named Chief Communications and Marketing Officer (CCMO) for the Americas. Smith, who joined Union Bank in 2009 as Chief Marketing Officer, also continues as deputy general manager of the global MUFG Brand Development Office in Tokyo. Based in San Francisco and New York, Smith will report to MUFG Union Bank’s President and Chief Executive Officer Katsumi Hatao.

Smith is responsible for developing the bank’s holistic communications and marketing strategy, executing programs designed to strengthen the bank’s market presence and raise MUFG Americas' brand profile in the Americas region, which includes the U.S., Latin America, Canada and Mexico. He will lead the company’s functions that touch many of the internal and external constituencies in support of organizational objectives for the Americas. Specifically, Smith will oversee all Corporate Communications and Marketing functions, including Corporate Marketing, Branding, Digital Marketing, Advertising, Client Insights & Research, Sponsorship Marketing and Events, Integrated Communications, and the Marketing Project Management Office.

Prior to joining Union Bank in 2010, Smith was head of Global Brand Marketing at Wachovia Corporation. He also served as a key member of the executive team and was responsible for brand strategy and management, integrated marketing communications, advertising, sports marketing and strategic alliances. Before Wachovia, Smith was CEO of National Renewable Energy Corporation, a firm that he co-founded, drove to profitability, and then sold to private equity.

He also served as the Chief Marketing Officer at McGladrey, the global professional services division of H&R Block, and head of global marketing and brand strategy at Duke Energy. Smith began his marketing career in 1985 with Xerox Corporation in Rochester, New York, where he rose to the head of global marketing across multiple business units during his 17 years with the firm.

Smith earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, and a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Nazareth College, also in Rochester.
