NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Actor Mark Ruffalo and others pledged to reduce their meat consumption at the Beyond Meat brunch to highlight the positive environmental effects of choosing plant-based meats over animal protein.
During the United Nations Climate Summit, Beyond Meat, in conjunction with Meatless Monday and Meat Free Monday, will promote how increasing the use of plant-based meats, and reducing reliance on animal protein, can take a significant bite out of climate change.
Experts estimate that livestock contributes as much as 51% of total greenhouse gas emissions (Worldwatch.org). “Our focus is on taking the animal out of meat – without sacrificing the taste, chew or satisfaction,” said Beyond Meat CEO and Founder Ethan Brown. “The single most effective action that a consumer can take today to address climate change is to switch the protein at the center of plate from animal to plant sources. It is our goal to make that switch as delicious, satisfying, and nutritious as possible.”
Meat Free Monday founder Sir Paul McCartney says, “Going meat free one day a week is a simple way to contribute to a more sustainable future.” McCartney and UK leader Greg Barker launched a Meat Free Pledge for Climate Week to help show world leaders that going meatless on Mondays helps fight climate change.
