Sloan, Bagley, Hatcher & Perry Law Firm Demonstrates Commitment to Justice 4 Children Foundation’s Heads In Helmets Program as First National Ambassador by Fitting More Than 4,300 Children with Free Safety Helmets for Head Injury Prevention

HOUSTON & LONGVIEW, Texas--()--As the first national ambassador of The Justice 4 Children Foundation’s Heads In Helmets program, Sloan, Bagley, Hatcher & Perry Law Firm (www.sloanfirm.com and www.sloanfirmhouston.com) has demonstrated solid leadership and a deep commitment to the cause of preventing traumatic brain injuries in children: The Sloan Firm, with offices in Longview and Houston, has donated more than 4,300 free bicycle safety helmets at community events in Texas in 2013 and 2014.

The Justice 4 Children Foundation is a non-profit organization sponsored in Texas that was founded by Howard Spiva of The Spiva Law Group in 1999 in Savannah, Ga. The Sloan Firm became the first Heads In Helmets national ambassador in 2013 and is working with Spiva and The Justice 4 Children Foundation to recruit and train other law firms in the United States to equip even more children with free safety helmets. Children aged 4 to 14 are the primary audience for the helmets and must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian to receive the helmets. Staff members and volunteers affiliated with The Sloan Firm and Spiva Law Group ensure that each child receives a custom fit to maximize safety and comfort.

According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the two age groups at greatest risk for traumatic brain injury are ages 0-4 and 15-19.

“Our firm has gained the positive reputation as ‘those lawyers who give out free safety helmets to kids,’ ” commented Kevin Fullen, firm administrator for Sloan, Bagley, Hatcher & Perry Law Firm. “We have gladly spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours custom-fitting children in the heat, cold and rain at our Texas events. We have aligned with police departments, children’s museums, festivals, health fairs and back to school events to equip Texas kids with free helmets. Parents always express their gratitude and typically are surprised that our firm gives these helmets away free of charge.”

According to the Brain Injury Association of America Web site (www.biausa.org), traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of disability and death in children and adolescents in the U.S. An estimated 2.4 million children and adults in the U.S. sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and another 795,000 individuals sustain an acquired brain injury (ABI) from non-traumatic causes each year. Currently more than 5.3 million children and adults in the U.S. live with a lifelong disability as a result of TBI and an estimated 1.1 million have a disability due to stroke.

“Basically, our goal is to make helmets cool so that kids will wear them. The community at large has embraced us because this is a great cause -- and a worthy cause. Parents and community leaders see that we are focused on making kids safer,” said Spiva, who believes children should use helmets not only when they ride bikes but also when they ride in cars. “l am committed to increasing participation for Heads In Helmets among attorneys across the country. Our program helps families and, at the same time, allows them to get to know lawyers in a non-legal context.”

Spiva Law Group has given away almost 2,000 free safety helmets in 2013 and 2014 – and more than 10,000 helmets since the program’s inception.

The Sloan Firm won top honors in the Best Public Health/Safety Initiative category of PR Daily’s 2013 Corporate Social Responsibility Awards for its Heads In Helmets community outreach program. Spiva Law Group has won 12 awards, with some of them being the 2011 Reader’s Choice Award from Savannah Morning News, the 2011 Outstanding Service to the Community Award from Savannah Bar Association, the 2011 Community Service Award from Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, and the 2011 Home Town Hero Award from WTOC TV.
