NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As the largest gathering ever to greet a Prime Minister of India outside the subcontinent takes shape, the Indian American Community Foundation provided an official update on preparations today. On September 28, 2014, India’s 15th Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address 20,000 members of the American public, including Indian American community leaders and a delegation of elected officials from the United States. The event will be held at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden with a live webcast planned as well.
Miss America 2014, Nina Davuluri, and PBS NewsHour Weekend Anchor Hari Sreenivasan will emcee a celebration that will include a program of high profile Indian and American themed cultural entertainment leading up to the Prime Minister’s address to the American people.
“Citizens of the world’s greatest democracy are eager to hear from the leader of the world’s largest democracy. The Indian American Community Foundation was formed to bring together organizations across the Indian American diaspora to host what promises to be an historic event,” said Anand Shah, IACF spokesman. “As September 28 nears, members and leaders of more than 400 partner organizations along with hundreds of volunteers are mobilizing their communities to ensure a truly memorable afternoon at Madison Square Garden.”
Since August 19, more than 28,000 people have registered for free tickets to the community reception for Prime Minister Modi. Ticket registration occurred in two phases: one for members of participating community organizations and the second for general admission seats which will be allocated by a lottery process later this week.
Despite some unsourced reports that erroneously suggested otherwise, Shah clarified, “IACF is only responsible for organizing the community reception in honor of the Prime Minister at Madison Square Garden.” “Tickets to the event are free. The program has been generously sponsored by thousands of individuals who are excited to participate in an unprecedented show of support to promote a stronger friendship between the United States and India.”
