FORT WORTH, Texas--()--The Red Bull Air Race World Championship swooped into Fort Worth over the weekend, marking the series’ return to the United States after a three year absence. More than 40,000 spectators came out to witness the world’s fastest motorsports series in the skies over Texas Motor Speedway. Twelve of the world’s best race pilots faced off on a low-level aerial track comprised of 80-foot-high, air-filled pylons, flying at speeds of up to 230 mph while enduring forces of up to 10G. The track at “The Great American Speedway” proved to be one of the most challenging of the season due to the tight turns, extreme heat and difficult wind conditions. Despite their best attempts, American pilots Kirby Chambliss and Michael Goulian were unable to finish on the podium, finishing 10th and 11th, respectively. Top honors went to Frenchman Nicolas Ivanoff, with Britain’s Nigel Lamb taking second and Canada’s Pete McLeod finishing third. More race info is available at www.redbullairrace.com.

Fans can catch the full-length broadcast of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship from Texas Motor Speedway on Monday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1. The broadcast is hosted by Nick Fellows with analysis by 2005 and 2007 Red Bull Air Race world champion, Mike Mangold.

The results in Texas tightened the overall Red Bull Air Race World Championship battle as Paul Bonhomme moved ahead of Hannes Arch in the series lead with 45 points thanks to his fifth place finish. Arch, who finished eighth, slipped into a two-way tie for second place with Lamb, at 44 points.

“It’s really nice to win the race on a great speedway like this,” Ivanoff said, after getting the third victory of his career. “I like the ambience of a motorsport race track like this, and finishing first was much better than I expected.”

The high-speed, low-altitude race through air gate pylons set up inside the 1.5-mile track was an historic occasion, as it was the first time an air race of any kind was held inside a speedway in the United States. The pilots and their planes took off and landed from the track’s infield, also a first in the United States.

After the stop in Texas, the Red Bull Air Race World Championship will move on to its second U.S. race in Las Vegas on Oct. 11-12. From there it will finish the season in Spielberg, Austria, on Oct. 25-26. The 2014 eight-race championship also had races in Abu Dhabi, UAE; Rovinj, Croatia; Putrajaya, Malaysia; Gdynia, Poland; and Ascot, United Kingdom.
