EVANSTON, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Manufacturers’ News, Inc.-- For a third straight year, manufacturing employment in Indiana posted a gain, reports the 2014 Indiana Manufacturers Directory®, an industrial database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI). According to data collected by MNI, Indiana manufacturers added 8,563 jobs or 1.5% from April 2013 to April 2014.
Manufacturers’ News reports Indiana is now home to 9,521 manufacturers employing 565,692 workers.
According to the database of Indiana manufacturers, gains were led by transportation equipment, which posted an employment increase of 2.8%. Transportation equipment ranks first in Indiana for manufacturing jobs, employing 86,890.
“Manufacturers in Indiana are making large strides, particularly in the all-important auto sector,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “The state’s reasonable business costs, skilled workforce, and its growing reputation as a center for innovation continue to lure manufacturers.”

Other sectors adding jobs included fabricated metals, up 3.7%; industrial machinery, up 2.9%; and food products, up 2.8%. Losses were reported in electronics, down 3.1%; and printing/publishing, down 1.4%.
Manufacturing companies in Indianapolis employ 78,806 workers, unchanged over the year. Jobs in Elkhart increased 2.1% and rose 1.7% in Fort Wayne. Jobs increased 1.4% in Northeast Indiana, 2.7% in the Northwest, 1.1% in the East Central region, 1.9% in Southeast Indiana and remained steady in the Southwest and West Central regions.
