CHARLOTTE, N.C.--()--In just four short weeks, the state of South Carolina has logged more than 1.5 million minutes while participating in the Fit Family Challenge. Coca-Cola has partnered with Upstate Parent, Palmetto Parent and Lowcountry Parent, along with CVS, Department of Health and Environmental Control, the Medical University of South Carolina and the South Carolina Hospital Association to pioneer this program in South Carolina.

The Fit Family Challenge is a free eight-week healthy lifestyle program. Participants log onto FitFamilyChallengeSC.com, register and start earning points for being active, eating healthy or simply turning off the TV. Prizes are awarded weekly, and the grand prize is a free trip to two incredible theme parks at Universal Orlando Studios. So far, more than 8,606 South Carolinians are participating in the program. Currently, the Upstate is in the lead with more than 792,000 minutes. The Palmetto region follows with more than 496,000 minutes, and the Lowcountry has clocked in 446,000 minutes.

In order to promote the Fit Family Challenge, press conferences were held in each area of the state. During those press conferences, participants were able to learn about the program and hear from some of the sponsors. Charleston Mayor Joe Riley expressed his support of the program. Dr. Susan Johnson, Director of Health Promotion from MUSC, spoke of how they had recently partnered with Coca-Cola to promote healthy beverage choices. “Today is a great example what can happen when diverse partners are willing to come to the table, find common ground and create goals for the greater good,” said Johnson. “MUSC is proud to be a partner in the SC Fit Family Challenge and is ready to assist families across the Lowcountry create healthier lives.”

In the Palmetto region, Mayors Steve Benjamin of Columbia and Steve MacDougall of Lexington will be the spotlight families for the challenge. The mayors and their families will post updates of what they’re doing to stay active and how the program has helped them.

The Fit Family Challenge’s goal is to encourage families to maintain healthy and active lifestyles. “The Fit Family Challenge is a great example of the kind of public-private partnership that helps benefit the citizens of South Carolina by encouraging parents and children to live their lives healthier, better and longer,” said Catherine Templeton, Director of the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control. South Carolina’s participants have taken advantage of everything this program has to offer. Families are eligible to win prizes at any point during the eight-week program.
