PISCATAWAY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--IEEE, the world's largest professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, today announced the launch of a series of new standards-development projects designed to further innovation in the burgeoning “e-health” space. The new IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) projects are intended to produce standards that support plug-and-play, interoperable communications across a wider array of personal health devices and three-dimensional (3D) medical systems.

Ultimately, standards-based e-health is intended to help more people around the world live longer, healthier and more enjoyable lives.”
Among the new standards-development projects are five within the IEEE 11073™ family, which has grown to number more than 20 standards intended to support plug-and-play, interoperable communications and a common core of communications functionality between various e-health devices and compute engines such as health appliances, set-top boxes, cell phones and personal computers. The IEEE 11073 standards are designed to improve wellness monitoring and preventive healthcare and support independent living, wellness and fitness. The new IEEE 11073 projects are:
- IEEE P11073™-10404a “Health Informatics - Personal Health Device Communication - Device Specialization - Pulse Oximeter Amendment;”
- IEEE P11073-10407a “Health Informatics - Personal Health Device Communication - Device Specialization - Blood Pressure Monitor Amendment;”
- IEEE P11073-10408a “Health informatics--Personal health device communication Part 10408: Device specialization -- Thermometer Amendment;”
- IEEE P11073-10415a “Health Informatics - Personal Health Device Communication - Device Specialization - Weighing Scale Amendment,” and
- IEEE P11073-10420a “Health informatics -- Personal health device communication Part 10420: Device specialization -- Body composition analyzer Amendment.”

In addition, the IEEE-SA launched four projects designed to yield standards that would help advance 3D imaging and simulation in healthcare:
- IEEE P3333.1.2™ “Draft Standard for the Perceptual Quality Assessment of Three Dimensional (3D) Contents based on Physiological Mechanisms,” which is intended to define quality metrics based on mechanisms such as perceptual quality and visual attention and reduce risks for users of 3D displays and devices for applications such as medical imaging;
- IEEE P3333.2.2™ “Draft Standard for Three-Dimensional (3D) Medical Visualization,” which is intended to establish routine techniques for 3D medical virtualization and interpretation;
- IEEE P3333.2.3™ “Draft Standard for Three-Dimensional (3D) Medical Data Management,” which is intended to define a standardized method for sharing two-dimensional and 3D data with security for human-care manager and medical service providers, and
- IEEE P3333.2.4™ “Draft Standard for Three-Dimensional (3D) Medical Simulation,” which is intended to standardize 3D simulations of joint movement and subsequent changes in skin, muscle and neighboring structures.
