West Point Leadership: Profiles of Courage Awarded Three Individual Ben Franklin Book Awards

NEW YORK--()--The Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) announced today that “West Point Leadership: Profiles of Courage”(WPLPOC) would be awarded three separate literary awards for “Best Biography”, “Best Gift Book” and the “Bill Fisher Award for Best First Book (Non-Fiction)”. On May 28th the IBPA will award WPLPOC with either a Silver or Gold Award for each of the three categories at the Book ExpoAmerica at the Javits Center in New York City.

The authors Dan Rice and John Vigna, both West Point graduates, had unprecedented access to distinguished West Point graduates in a variety of leadership positions across America including Generals, CEOs, Members of Congress, Astronauts and Ambassadors. This unique access allowed the team to interview and create the authorized biographies of such West Point legends as Generals Petraeus, McChrystal, Dempsey, Austin, Eikenberry, Kearney, Brooks, Becky Halstead and Odierno, while also interviewing and being the biographers to Captains of Industry such as the CEOs of top-tier companies such as Johnson & Johnson (Gorsky), P&G (McDonald), 7-Eleven (DePinto), Mercedes Benz USA (Cannon), Foot Locker (Hicks), Bridgewater Associates (McCormick) and many others.

The book also chronicles the history of women and minorities at West Point through the lives of some inspirational trailblazers such as Henry O. Flipper (born a slave and the 1st African-American graduate of West Point); General Benjamin O. Davis (Founder & Commander of the Tuskegee Airmen); Pat Locke (1st Female African-American Graduate); and Andrea Lee Hollen (1st Female Graduate); Brigadier General Becky Halstead (1st Female Graduate) as well as Generals Austin and Brooks, two current four-star African-American US Army Generals and many others.

The book has received laudatory reviews from military historians and leadership experts. "To call 'West Point Leadership: Profiles of Courage' impressive would be a major understatement--it is awesome, almost to the point of being intimidating, in scope, certainly, and even in size. Seeking just the right word to describe your book, I decided on 'monumental.' It truly is that, both literally and metaphorically,” said noted historian Lieutenant General Dave Palmer (USA, Retired) who served as the Superintendent of West Point from 1986-1991.

The Co-Author and Publisher Dan Rice will begin a book PR tour on May 1, 2014 to promote the book and celebrate these three distinguished Benjamin Franklin Awards. On May 28th, President Obama will give the commencement speech at West Point to the graduating Class of 2014. The book has a section dedicated to the Presidential visits to West Point and the importance of such visits to the nation and the world. The authors have unique photos of past Presidential visits and will be discussing the importance of these visits during their book PR tour. It is the perfect award-winning gift book for any patriotic Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gift.
