1366 Technologies Selected as 2014 New Energy Pioneer

Companies from around the world are recognized as leaders driving change in the energy system

NEW YORK & BEDFORD, Mass.--()--Bloomberg New Energy Finance, the provider of unique analysis, tools and data for decision makers driving change in the energy system, today announced 1366 Technologies as a 2014 New Energy Pioneer. The winners were recognized on stage at the seventh annual Bloomberg New Energy Finance Summit in New York City.

“1366 Technologies is honored to be named a New Energy Pioneer. This award is testament to the hard work and commitment of our incredibly talented team who has accomplished so much in such a short period of time,” said Frank van Mierlo, CEO, 1366 Technologies. “By dramatically reducing the costs, time and waste associated with manufacturing silicon wafers, we are closer than ever to delivering solar at the cost of coal.”

The judges acknowledged the significant momentum gained by 1366 this past year and recognized the potential of the company’s Direct Wafer™ technology. Direct Wafer™ replaces an expensive, time consuming and wasteful wafer making process with a continuous, single-step version that can be utilized in 80% of the world’s cell factories – all without adding a single new piece of equipment. As a result, the building blocks of solar cells are produced at a fraction of today’s cost.

This year’s winners represent a broad range of industries including bioenergy, energy efficiency, geothermal, innovative finance, smart energy technology, solar and water. By rewarding game changing innovators, Bloomberg New Energy Finance hopes to highlight the profound transition in today’s energy system, towards new business models, technologies and market structures that are challenging the status quo.

The awards program, now in its fifth year, selects ten New Energy Pioneers each year. This year the independent panel of industry experts selected the winners from numerous applicants from around the world, assessing them against three criteria: innovation, demonstrated momentum and potential global scale.

Michael Wilshire, Selection Committee Chair and Head of Analysis of Bloomberg New Energy Finance, said: “We were impressed by the strength and breadth of innovation in this year’s New Energy Pioneer candidates and their potential to accelerate the next wave of industry growth. We are again very grateful to our group of judges who narrowed this field down to just ten winners. We wish all of the Pioneers every success in the future.”

Other 2014 winners include Breathing Buildings, Bridgelux, Coolerado, Genomatica, Green Energy Group, M-KOPA Solar, Oasys Water, Renmatix, and Younicos.

Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s New Energy Pioneers program is supported by EY, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, and Broadscale.
