SMITHFIELD, N.C.--()--At Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield NC, StatVideo’s EchoCart streams real-time images of babies’ hearts and live video conferencing over the WEB to pediatric cardiologists at Duke Children’s Hospital. Tele-echocardiography is an important method for remote assessment of congenital heart disease, and EchoCart is the first telemedicine system designed specifically for tele-echocardiography.

“Assessment of congenital heart disease requires close collaboration between the sonographer that performs the imaging procedure, and the pediatric cardiology specialist that reads the imaging study. The tele-echo system enables video communications between the caregivers and families in Smithfield and the Duke physicians located in Durham. Using the tele-echo system, we can view and sometimes guide the imaging procedure. Instead of just receiving a synopsis of our diagnosis and a conclusion, our Smithfield-based colleagues work together as a team with the Duke physicians. We also receive better information about the patient and each family’s background- an important factor when there are risk and quality-of-life issues to be considered. The families and patients benefit by avoiding travel, saving time and money. This is a win-win for everybody.”- Piers Barker MD, Director of Non-Invasive Imaging and Pediatric Echocardiography at Duke Children’s Hospital.

"Our sonographers are experienced at scanning adults. However, it's more challenging to image pediatric patients and detect congenital heart defects. This technology allows us to perform a complete and thorough study. Also, it allows the pediatric cardiologist, who is at a different site, to view the images and, if need be, to talk with the sonographer, patient and their family. Because this system streams over the Web, we do not need leased lines and, therefore, save about $3,000 a year."-Janet Evans, Lead Cardiovascular Sonographer, Johnston Medical Center

"We collaborated with StatVideo to produce the T38 EchoCart. Rubbermaid is the leading manufacturer of telemedicine carts, and we were seeking a partner that specialized in tele-echocardiography. StatVideo has extensive experience with echocardiography and a strong track record with their EchoBox product. The result is a system that streams high definition and high frame rate echo images, and runs a variety of competitive video teleconferencing software solutions including Cisco, Vidyo and VSEE."-Jon Putman, Manager, Rubbermaid Medical Solutions
