Washington Gas Sets Record for Natural Gas Sendout During Polar Vortex

WASHINGTON--()--WGL Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: WGL) and Washington Gas announce that the January 2014 polar vortex drove customers to break the company’s record of natural gas sendout within a 24-hour period.

From 1 a.m. on January 7 to 12:59 a.m. on January 8, Washington Gas had a record daily sendout of 1.652 million dekatherms (dths) of natural gas, representing the total amount used by the company’s 1.1 million natural gas customers in the entire metropolitan Washington, D.C., area. That level is 8,000 dths higher than the previous record date of January 16, 2009, which was during President Barack Obama’s first inauguration weekend in 2009. This January has been so cold that a total of seven days this month have made the list of Washington Gas’ highest 25 ever natural gas usage days.

“With the extraordinary demand for natural gas during these incredibly cold days, our gas delivery system and our dedicated employees were able to continue to provide our customers with seamless, safe and reliable gas service,” said WGL Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Washington Gas, Terry D. McCallister. “We are extremely proud of our performance.”

As this season’s frigid air persists, Washington Gas customers can continue to rely on the company’s natural gas service and are encouraged to take steps to help keep their homes warm. Examples of this are to regularly replace the home’s air filter, set the water heater level to low or warm, and to caulk, weather strip, and insulate doors and windows.
