Crowdtilt Accepts $30K Dogecoin Donation, Putting Jamaican Bobsled Team Over $100K Olympics Fundraising Goal

SAN FRANCISCO--()--Crowdtilt and Dogecoin have announced that the Jamaican Bobsled Team’s official crowdfunding campaign on Crowdtilt.com has raised more than $100,000, surpassing its $80,000 goal after a $30,000 donation from 1,600 members of the Dogecoin community. This donation, combined with the $70,000 raised on Crowdtilt.com, will help fund the Jamaican Bobsled team’s competition at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

“It is so exciting to see the Internet coming together to help this inspiring team from Jamaica fulfill their dream of competing in the 2014 Olympics. We've built Crowdtilt to make it easy for communities and groups to come together and are so thrilled every time we get to see something like this,” said James Beshara, CEO and co-founder of Crowdtilt.

"The community has rallied behind Dogecoin over the past couple months, and through great initiatives such as the Jamaican Bobsled team funding we're not only helping a fantastic cause but working together over a shared passion," said Jackson Palmer, co-founder of Dogecoin. "It's humbling to see people get together and do something so positive on the internet, and if we can promote that spirit through Dogecoin then I think our mission is complete."

Last week, the Jamaican Bobsled team qualified to compete at the 2014 Olympics, but didn’t have the funds to make it to Russia to compete. This weekend, Devon Harris, retired Jamaican bobsledder and one of the founding members of the Jamaica National Bobsled Team, began managing a fundraising campaign for the team on Crowdtilt.com. The campaign has raised over $70,000 from people from all 50 states and 49 countries from around the world.

Around the same time, community members of Dogecoin, a friendly peer-to-peer digital currency, rallied together to raise over $30,000 worth of the currency for the team. The Dogecoin Foundation has converted 27 million dogecoins into 38 Bitcoins and donated them through Crowdtilt to put the campaign over its $80,000 goal.

The campaign will remain open for donations until January 28th and contributions over $50 will get a commemorative t-shirt to help cheer on the Internet-embraced Jamaican team.
