CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.--()--IKEA, the world’s leading home furnishings retailer, today announced the appointment of Selwyn Crittendon as manager of its future Miami-Dade store opening Summer 2014 in Sweetwater, FL. Until IKEA Miami opens as the 2nd IKEA store in South Florida and 4th in the state, customers can shop at Broward County’s IKEA Sunrise.

“We are very excited about opening a Miami-Dade store in South Florida to complement the presence established by IKEA Sunrise,” said IKEA U.S. president Mike Ward. “Selwyn’s commerciality and customer service experience with IKEA and his previous retail background have prepared him for managing IKEA Miami.”

“IKEA recognizes the strong customer base for us in South Florida based on the success of our store in the Broward County city of Sunrise, so I am pleased about helping provide a store for Miami-Dade customers,” Crittendon said. “Also, I look forward to introducing our unique family-friendly shopping experience and wide selection of stylish, functional and affordable home furnishings to shoppers who have not yet visited IKEA.”

Crittendon, who relocated to South Florida from Orlando, joined IKEA after serving in many capacities at a large catalog-based retail store in Virginia. A native of Northern Virginia, Crittendon joined IKEA in 2002 as customer convenience manager at IKEA Woodbridge, VA, near Washington, DC. Two years later, he was promoted to customer service manager. In 2007, Crittendon joined the team opening IKEA Orlando, and after three years as customer service manager, became the store’s sales manager. In 2012, Crittendon became deputy Orlando store manager, serving until becoming store manager of IKEA Miami.

The 416,000 square-foot future IKEA Miami, and nearly 1,500 parking spaces, will be built on 14.6 acres adjacent to the Dolphin Mall, at the intersection of the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) and Florida’s Turnpike, in the City of Sweetwater. The store will reflect the unique architectural design for which IKEA is known worldwide as well as significant sustainable building practices, including the installation of South Florida’s largest rooftop solar array, consistent with the company’s 90% solar presence atop its U.S. locations.

IKEA Miami will feature nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items, 50 inspirational room-settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children’s play area, and a 600-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries and salmon plates, as well as American dishes. Other family-friendly features include a ‘Children’s IKEA’ area in the Showroom, baby care rooms, play areas throughout the store, and preferred parking. In addition to the more than 750 jobs expected to be created during construction, approximately 350 coworkers would join the IKEA family when the new store opens. Diverse positions at this employer of choice include: home furnishings sales, interior decoration, customer service, safety and security, cashiers, maintenance, goods flow, receiving, warehouse and stock replenishment. Also, IKEA Miami will offer more than 60 food service opportunities in its Restaurant, Swedish Foodmarket, Café Bistro and coworker cafeteria.

Since its 1943 founding in Sweden, IKEA has offered home furnishings of good design and function, at low prices so the majority of people can afford them. There are currently more than 340 IKEA stores in 43 countries, including 38 in the U.S. IKEA has been ranked in FORTUNE’s annual “100 Best Companies to Work For” list, Working Mother magazine’s annual list of “100 Best Companies for Working Mothers” and Training magazine’s annual “Top 100.” IKEA incorporates sustainability into day-to-day business and supports initiatives that benefit children and the environment.
