Suerte Tequila: With Purchase of Jalisco, Mexico Distillery, One-Year Brand Anniversary Celebration Comes Early

Suerte Tequila Reaches Deal on Purchase of Tequilera Simbolo Distillery

BOULDER, Colo.--()--Just one month before Boulder, CO-based Suerte Tequila celebrates its first anniversary, co-founders Laurence Spiewak and Lance Sokol announced today that the brand has purchased the distillery that has been producing Suerte tequilas since the company’s inception.

Spiewak and Sokol purchased the 15,000 square foot Tequilera Simbolo, located on 8.25 acres in the highlands of rural Atotonilco El Alto, Jalisco, Mexico, from the family of Suerte Master Distiller Pedro Hernandez Barba. Barba retains his ownership stake in Suerte and his position as master distiller. Barba is one of only a handful of Mexican distillers who insist on using a traditional, hand-carved stone wheel, called a tahona, to crush 100% of Suerte’s pure Blue Weber Agave. The practice lends the resulting product a unique flavor unmatched by those using more modern processing methods such as a steel shredder.

Said Suerte co-founder Laurence Spiewak, “Lance and I feel privileged to know the family through our relationship with Pedro. While the distillery has been in operation for just short of a decade, the land on which it sits has been in Pedro’s family for nearly two hundred years. Though we now own the distillery from a transactional point of view, Pedro’s work with us means that in a sense the property stays in the family.”

For Suerte, the purchase allows the brand to be vertically integrated, ensuring that Suerte tequilas are the only brands distilled at the facility and that they are bottled on-site. The strategy also allows for internal control of the brand’s agave supply, guaranteeing only the highest-quality product is used in creating Suerte’s blanco, reposado, and añejo tequilas.

Tours of the distillery will be available by appointment only.
