MONTRÉAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SOVO Technologies Inc., a leader in closed captioning of live programs, announced today the renewal of its service agreement with RDS, a division of Bell Media. As per the agreement, SOVO shall continue providing all closed captioning for the deaf and hearing impaired of live sporting events broadcast on RDS, RDS2 and RDS Info, along with some of the captioning for prerecorded programs as well. The agreement ensures RDS with continuity of SOVO services, which meet the new mandatory quality standards for French-language closed captioning imposed by the CRTC.
“SOVO’s expertise in sporting events captioning, the capacity of the organization to meet our large volume demands and our very dynamic broadcast schedule, along with their guarantee of compliance to regulatory requirements make it the partner of choice,” said Robert Turcotte, Vice-President of programming and business development at RDS. “Our sports programming imposes its share of difficulties to the production of live captioning. Our commentators and analysts often use a high speech rate, along with specialized terminology composed of technical terms, foreign athletes’ names, etc. This makes it particularly difficult to reach our live captioning objectives in terms of delay, speed and accuracy. The team at SOVO has proven over the years that it could meet even our most demanding requests.”
SOVO uses a proprietary technology based on speech recognition which yields unmatched results, particularly with respect to the speed at which the captions are produced in realtime. This unique technology, combined with production operations honed over tens of thousands of hours of live captioning, allows SOVO to produce high quality captions even under the most difficult conditions, for instance in debate shows, or when very short and successive interventions are made, or when a specialized terminology is used. To this day, SOVO is the only Canadian supplier to offer a quality standards compliance program to broadcasters.
“We are extremely pleased to extend our long term collaboration with RDS, in order to help them meet all their accessibility objectives,” said Serge Forest, President and CEO of SOVO. “The SOVO team will continue to push the envelope in making the content of RDS, RDS2 and RDS Info as accessible as possible for the benefit of all sports fans suffering from a hearing impairment.”
Studies show that in Canada, one person out of ten is suffering from a form of hearing loss, and that this proportion is increasing. Closed captioning for the deaf and hard of hearing is now a regulatory requirement for broadcasters in a growing number of countries around the world.
