SPENCER, Ind.--()--Last April, Cook Group Incorporated committed to sponsor the renovation of the Tivoli Theatre, which is owned by Owen County Preservations. This weekend, less than a year after renovations began, the Tivoli Theatre will screen its first feature film in 14 years to the community. The Tivoli is celebrating its grand opening with the public by showing Oz the Great and Powerful.

The theatre closed in 1998 and fell into disrepair.

In the past year, the theatre has undergone a remarkable transformation. The interior and exterior features have been completely restored with a modern infrastructure that preserves the theatre’s historic character.

The renovations also included an addition to the north side of the building that provides a kitchen, restrooms and additional office space.

“Opening the Tivoli theatre will be a great way to celebrate the end of a successful preservation,” said Carl Cook, CEO of Cook Group Inc. “We appreciate all of the support we’ve received throughout the process from Owen County Preservations, Indiana Landmarks and the Spencer community.”

The late Spencer artist E.M. Viquesney, who was best known for the World War I sculpture, “The Spirit of the American Doughboy”, built the Tivoli Theatre. The theatre originally opened on New Year’s Eve in 1928. The Tivoli was damaged in a fire in 1985, but continued to operate until 1998.

The theatre was previously listed as an endangered property under the protection of Indiana Landmarks, and is the latest in a series of partnerships between Cook Group and Indiana Landmarks.

Past Cook Group and Indiana Landmarks projects include the French Lick Springs Hotel, West Baden Springs Hotel and the headquarters of Indiana Landmarks, the Old Centrum Church in Indianapolis.
